About Laurie

Laurie Geiger Laurie Geiger is one of our Grades 2, 3 & 4 teachers. She has taught for 20 years--18 of those at Carbondale New School. She has a BS in Elementary Education from the University of Minnesota in Duluth and is certified for Kindergarten-6th grades. Laurie minored in Music, and is also the CNS Choir Director, leading the choir in our Winter Program and Graduation Ceremony. She is a Reading Specialist and is trained in the Herman Reading method. She has taught Pre-kindergarten through 8th grade and is trained in Love and Logic®. Laurie has 9 credits towards a Master's degree in Rehabilitation at SIU-Carbondale and has worked with special populations for 15 years. Laurie is also the recipient of the 2012 SIUC Sigma Xi Math and Science Teacher of the Year award.

Laurie's Philosophy of Teaching

Pond Study I firmly believe that teaching is not a solo effort. It takes a team of teacher(s), students, and parents. I strive to develop a relationship with each student by recognizing their talents and strengths, and celebrating their individuality. To create an atmosphere where students reach their personal potential, I incorporate active, hands-on learning: modeling, exploring, sharing, singing, acting and dancing. In addition, I recognize that there are different learning styles and tempos, and consider all seven of these styles (kinesthetic, math, logic, interpersonal, linguistic, music and spatial) when teaching. I want to help my students gain knowledge that will help them achieve their long term goals.

Service Learning Projects

My students participate in three service learning projects. These projects are undertaken because I believe students need the opportunity to become good citizens and to give back to the community and help others. I believe that the more you give, the more you get, and that giving can make us feel good. These are the projects:
